Here's my basic guide to woodcutting. When I started replaying RuneScape I was at level 20 for woodcutting. In 5 days and not continuously playing I was at lvl 60 at least.
Level 1-17 : You should be cutting regulat trees on these levels. Don't bother getting higher level axes as you go up in this time. Bronze is perfect for these levels.
Level 18-33: For these levels you should be cutting Oaks. Keep using your bronze axe until you get to level 21. At this level you should start using a mithril axe. You will be using this axe until you are level 41!
Level 34-60: Now you will be cutting Willows until you reach level 60. This will be difficult and hard. But it is worth it. When you get to level 41 toss that Mithril Axe and move onto the Rune Axe!
Level 60+ : Ok now you should be getting the idea onto what to do. Your highest level for woodcutting may be level 99. If you are a member you can cut Magic Trees which go for 1,000 GP per log at level 75. Yews vary between worlds and sell between 230-300 GP each. Good Luck and have fun WCing!
